Singing Over Us

Zepheniah 3:17 tells us that God “exults over us with loud singing”.  According to Psalm 42:8 His song is with us even when we sleep.

I feel like I’ve been doing the same thing over each of my children from the moments they were born. It can be a celebration… a random silliness… a way to keep them moving, keep them motivated. Sometimes it’s been in moments… minutes… even hours of desperation… singing until my throat is dry with frustration over the headstrong or ill child who simply. will. not. sleep.

This is how God sings over us. In praise. In frustration. In longing. In patience.

Last night, Little Man (3 years old) sang to us. We’ve heard him singing softly in his room or in the back of the van, but never quite been able to hear his words. But last night he sat cross-legged on his bed and offered quietly, “me sing a song about boats for you?”

“Okay,” we said.

He sat up straight and concentrated. “I luf boats… cuz… I luf Mama… cuz… I luf Mama and Papa…” he sang with his little squeaky voice.

“You like that song?”

We nearly burst, grinning at him. “We love that song,” we told him.

“That your favorite song?” he asked.

“Yes, that’s our favorite song.”

Psalm 96:2 says “Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.” [NRSV]

God already knows of His salvation. He doesn’t need us to explain it to him… but he sure wants to hear how we feel about it. We should sing to God as a lover… because singing is a very intimate, personal thing…. to be unabashedly in love and free with our expression… to sing blessings to He who blesses us. To repeat back to him with joy all the good that he sings into our lives.

And I’m a bit chagrined that I didn’t see this coming. I sing everything to Little Man. I sing about finding shoes to wear. About putting the milk back in the fridge… and then about remembering to close the fridge door before the penguins get out. I shouldn’t be surprised when he sings about his favorite things… about boats, airplanes and motorbikes.

I move through life with God’s constant song around me… why wouldn’t I sing to him about my favorite things… the things that are most awe-inspiring and magical to me?

I love life… cuz… I love my ABBA.

You like that song?
